A Day in the Life of a Mortgage Broker

We’re back with another blog on the day in the life of one of our Mortgage Brokers here at Right Click Finance. This time it’s from the perspective of Mortgage and Protection Advisor Alex Monks.

Take it away Alex...

Tell us a Little Bit About Yourself…

I’m Alex and I’m a Mortgage and Protection Advisor working with Right Click Finance, Mortgage Brokers and First-Time Buyer Mortgage Specialists company – you can find me either in the Southport branch of Ball and Percival, Southport Estate Agents, or at the Right Click Finance head office at Prospect House in Liverpool. I have been working in the industry for just over a year now, having spent the previous twelve years working within education as a teacher.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my wife and four year old daughter. You can usually find me at the park, riding bikes, going swimming – she’s very active! When I’m not running around I enjoy bouldering, cooking, and even a bit of home brewing if the weather is ever clear enough! (I’m not allowed to do it in the house…)

I am a Manchester United fan, which wasn’t particularly easy being brought up in Liverpool. As well as following United I also support my local club Marine, as well as my home town club of SC Paderborn in Germany.

What Does Your Typical Day Look Like as a Mortgage and Protection Advisor?

My typical day usually starts the night before, checking my diary and making sure I’ve reached out to all of my upcoming appointments to check everything is still ok for the following day. I then spend my time speaking to applicants, finding out about their specific circumstances so that I can do research on their behalf in order to find the lenders and providers that are right for them.

Once I am able to make a recommendation and I have gone through the applicants documents, I spend time securing them a Decision in Principle in order for them to have an offer accepted, once they have found a place they’d like to buy.

In and amongst speaking with applicants, doing research and submitting applications, I don’t mind making cups of tea for everyone in the office – I’ve found since starting in this job that it’s important to stretch your legs!

What Advice Would You Give to First Time Buyers Looking for a Mortgage in this Current Market?

First of all, for first time buyers it’s really important to understand what your budget is – that is why I would always recommend speaking to a mortgage broker before you view any properties.

In order to make sure you’re giving the right information to your mortgage broker, download a full credit report to show your credit score as well as all of the commitments you currently have and your history of making payments on time and in full. It’s important to understand your credit history at this part of the process as any missed payments or adverse credit on your file will affect what lenders will consider you as a potential customer.

Once you have this, along with your recent pay slips etc, book in an appointment and go through your situation with the mortgage broker. They will then do the research for you. This will save you a lot of time and ensure you are looking at properties that are affordable for you.

It is also really important to consider any savings you may have – do not use all of this for your property deposit. There will be other fees associated with buying your first property and you will need money set aside for this.

What's the Best Part of Working for Right Click Finance?

The best part of working for Right Click Finance is getting to work alongside so many experienced mortgage brokers and specialists. If you ever have a question, or a situation you have not faced before, you can guarantee a colleague will always help you out however they can.

Getting to work in both the Ball and Percival Estate Agency in Southport as well as the Right Click Finance head office in Liverpool means that I deal with colleagues in a number of different roles which means I can see the whole house buying process. From the estate agents and the sales progressors in Ball and Percival, to the case handlers, admin team and other mortgage brokers in Liverpool; everyone is so helpful and easy to work with.
